5 signs that pop-up is a tech support scam
Fake virus warnings are one of the most common scams around. Here is how to spot one and what to do if you already called.
A loud alarm, a flashing red screen and a phone number to call "Microsoft Support". It looks scary, and that is exactly the point. Here is how to tell it is fake.
The warning signs
- It gives you a phone number. Real security software never asks you to call anyone.
- It creates urgency. Countdown timers, "your files will be deleted" and alarms are pressure tactics.
- It appeared in your web browser. If it is inside Chrome, Edge or Safari, it is a web page, not a real system alert.
- It will not let you close it. Scam pages try to go full screen to look official.
- Someone wants remote access or payment. Gift cards, wire transfers or crypto are never legitimate.
How to get rid of it
Close the browser. On Windows press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, choose your browser and click End task. On a Mac press Cmd + Option + Esc. When you reopen the browser, do not restore the previous tabs.
Already called or let them in?
Disconnect from the internet, do not give out more information, and call your bank if you paid anything. Then have the computer checked: scammers often leave remote-access software behind.
